Proper wheelchair fit requires matching key body measurements: seat width, depth, height, back height, and armrest position—to ensure optimal posture, prevent skin breakdown, and maximize daily independence.
Key Body Measurements for Proper Fit
- Seat Width: Measure the widest part of the hips or thighs while seated, and add about one to two inches total clearance. As noted by 1800wheelchair, “Seat width should allow a couple of finger widths of space on each side—snug, not tight.” If a chair is too narrow, it causes pressure points; if too wide, it poor-positions the body and hinders propulsion.

- Seat Depth: Measure from the back of the buttocks to the inside of the knee, then subtract roughly one to two inches. Proper depth leaves a space of “3–4 finger widths between the seat’s edge and the back of the individual’s knee” to protect circulation behind the leg, according to Broda Seating. [1, 2, 3, 4]
- Seat Height: Distance from the floor to the seat should accommodate safe foot clearance or allow the feet to gently touch the ground if used for steering or stability. [1, 2]
Support and Postural Alignment
- The 90-90-90 Rule: Aim for a 90-degree bend at the hips, knees, and ankles with thighs parallel to the ground to prevent pelvic sliding and fatigue. [1]
- Armrests: Adjust height so elbows rest comfortably without forcing the shoulders to shrug upward or slump downward. [1]
- Backrest Height: Position the top of the back support to stabilize the trunk without restricting natural arm movement or shoulder blades during self-propulsion. [1]
